What is a Key?

A Key consists of the notes that you use to compose a musical composition.

Lets memorize the notes of the sharp keys first.

Memorize this saying:

Father Christmas Gave Dad An Electric Bass For Christmas

Once you have this you can work out how many sharps are in the sharp keys.

G is our first key that has a one sharp and is the F in Father.

You can either do the saying until you get to the key:

Father Christmas Gave and then minus 2 from the saying.

Father Christmas Gave

Then you have the Sharps for the key.

G has one sharp and is is Father (F#)

Let’s do it again.

D

Father Christmas Gave Dad

minus 2

Father Christmas Gave Dad

Therefore D has two sharps – F and C

This works for all of the sharps.
